Über das Gemälde

This watercolour is a copy after Luca Signorelli’s fresco in the cloister of Monteoliveto Maggiore in the province of Siena. It was made by Eduard Kaiser (1820-1887) for the Arundel Society, established in 1848, to record and promote the work of the Old Masters. The society made a speciality of reproducing in particular the Italian fresco cycles, of which the present work is a fine example. E.283-1995 shows an episode of the life of St Benedict, which Signorelli executed between 1498 and 1499.
