Über das Werk
Charles Knight produced a number of topographical views of Brighton, Lewes and the surrounding areas, for the "Recording Britain" scheme that was established during World War Two. This view of Southover Grange, Lewes, East Sussex, was created in 1940. The house was built by William Newton in 1572, and occupied by members of the Newton family for nearly 300 years. It was also the childhood home of the diarist John Evelyn (1620-1706).

Southover Grange was requisitioned by the War Department during World War Two, and the cast iron railings visible along the front wall were removed as part of the war effort. At least one bomb landed in the gardens in October 1940, but it failed to explode. At the end of the war the house and gardens passed into public ownership. Apart from the loss of a small chimneystack to the right of the entrance, the building itself appears to have survived relatively unchanged.
