Im Leben von Ivan Kramskoi

Das ganze Leben
  1. 1863

    Founding of the Artists' Artel

The artists who had left the Academy, led by Kramskoi, formed the "Saint Petersburg Artel of Artists" — Russia's first professional association independent of the Academy; Kramskoi was elected its head.

  2. 9 November 1863

    The "Revolt of the Fourteen"

Kramskoi led the refusal of fourteen Academy graduates to compete on the set theme "The Feast in Valhalla": on 9 November 1863, speaking for his comrades, he asked the council to release them from participation in the competition.

  3. 1870

    Co-Founder of the Peredvizhniki

In 1870 the "Society for Travelling Art Exhibitions" (the Peredvizhniki) was formed, with Kramskoi as one of its principal organizers and ideologues.

  4. 1871

"Mermaids" at the First Peredvizhniki Exhibition

At the Society's first exhibition Kramskoi presented the painting "Mermaids" (the artist's own title was "May Night. From Gogol"), which immediately stood out from the run of genre pictures; the painting was conceived at the Khoten estate in Kharkov Province.

  5. 1873

    Refusal of the Academy Professorship

On learning that the Council of the Imperial Academy had decided to award him the title of professor for "Christ in the Wilderness," Kramskoi refused, upholding his principle of the artist's independence from the Academy.
