Selected in 2019 as a Loewe Craft Prize finalist, Hashimoto Tomonari has attracted much attention for the intriguingly metallic appearance of his ceramics. He achieves this by firing three times: high-temperature bisque, lower temperature glost (1050°C), and a third firing in an improvised outdoor gas kiln. At 500°C the burners are turned off and the kiln is filled with cereal chaff and sealed. The burning chaff causes irregular carbon-impregnation of the clay body and uneven reduction and oxidation of the metal oxides in the glaze.
