Über die Skulptur

Saint Mary Magdalene (French - Sainte Marie-Madeleine) Penitent Magdalene (Madeleine pénitente) or The Beautiful German Woman (La Belle Allemande) is a painted wooden sculpture of a nude Mary Magdalene by Gregor Erhart (died 1540) of the Ulm School.

The statue has a been a church decoration in 16th century Bavaria to an artwork in private collections in the 19th century to an object on display at the Louvre where it is on display today.

During World War II it was an object notoriously coveted by Nazi war criminal Hermann Gőring, who acquired it for his art collection. It was recovered by the Allies in 1945 and returned to the Louvre.
