Im Leben von Giovanni Paolo Panini

Das ganze Leben
  1. 19 November 1704

First clerical tonsure at the Piacenza seminary

The son of Francesco Maria and Rosa Belli, who bears the double name Giovanni Paolo inherited from an elder brother who died in infancy, enters the bishop’s seminary of Piacenza and receives his first clerical tonsure from Bishop Giorgio Barni. Besides theology and literature he studies geometry and perspective there.

  2. 1704–1711

    Apprentice years in Piacenza

In his native Piacenza he studies under the quadratura painters Giuseppe Natali and Andrea Galluzzi (other accounts name Giovanni Battista Galluzzi) and with the stage designer Francesco Galli-Bibiena. His interest probably turns to the scenographic character of local painting, shaped by the Bolognese school, the theatre and the quadratura painters, an influence visible in his early work.

  3. 1711

Move to Rome: drawing with Benedetto Luti

He moves from Piacenza to Rome and studies drawing with Benedetto Luti.
