Зимой 1912−1913 года Попова жила в Париже, занималась в студии “La Palette” у художников Ле Фоконье, Метценже и Сегонзака. Здесь она осваивала кубизм. При этом молодая художница осматривала выставки и музеи Парижа. Ее интересовало не только новейшее, но и средневековое искусство и Ренессанс. Она делала копии с экспонатов музея Клюни, где были собраны французские средневековые шедевры.
Побывала она и в старинном городе Экуан в 18 километрах севернее Парижа, в Экуанском замке, где в наши дни располагается музей Ренессанса. Здесь Любовь Попова сделала копию путти с центральной части ренессансного итальянского блюда и записала цвета изображения. Название этого произведения в музее – «Блюдо с путти, играющим на бубне».

Ясно, что художницу интересовала композиция с фигурой, вписанной в круг. Она с удовольствием повторила в своем наброске расположение фигурки, касающейся головой верхнего края, а правой ножкой как бы отталкивающейся от круглого дна блюда. В беглом рисунке на вырванном из блокнота листе Попова наметила штриховки оригинала и записала цвета.
Для издания Третьяковской галереей каталога «Дар Костаки» источник копии, сделанной Поповой, установила в 2017 году Д.Д. Колпашникова. Тогда же были окончательно утверждены дата и название рисунка.

Studies in Paris under Le Fauconnier and Metzinger
She attends the studios of the Cubist painters Henri Le Fauconnier and Jean Metzinger at the Académie de La Palette in Paris, studying alongside Nadezhda Udaltsova.
1914–1916
Takes part in the avant-garde exhibitions
Together with Aleksandra Ekster, Nadezhda Udaltsova and Olga Rozanova she contributes to the “Knave of Diamonds” exhibitions, to “Tramway V” in Petrograd, to “0.10” and to “The Store”; at “0.10” she shows several figurative painted cardboard reliefs in a Cubist-derived style.
1916
Joins Malevich’s group “Supremus”
She joins Kazimir Malevich’s group Supremus; together with Aleksandra Ekster, Ivan Kliun, Nadezhda Udaltsova, Olga Rozanova, Ivan Puni, Nina Genke, Ksenia Boguslavskaya and others she works at the Verbovka village folk centre.
1918
Marries Boris von Eding
She marries the art historian Boris von Eding, author of a study, “Rostov Veliky, Uglich”, in the series “Monuments of Artistic Antiquity”; their son is born the same year.

Joins the Working Group of Constructivists
Having stayed out of the Working Group of Constructivists when it was set up in Moscow in March 1921, she joins it by the end of that year.

The “5×5=25” exhibition
She takes part in the “5×5=25” exhibition with Rodchenko, Varvara Stepanova, Alexander Vesnin and Alexandra Exter, each showing five abstract works. They declare that easel painting must be abandoned and all creative work given to the people and to the making of a new society.
