В 1917–1918 годах Шагалом был создан цикл живописных произведений, представляющих автопортрет с молодой женой художника, Беллой. «Прогулка» принадлежит, несомненно, к наиболее светлым и радостным картинам этого цикла. Мотив полета, возникающий в этом цикле, обретает в «Прогулке» самое живое, непосредственное воплощение и простое, ясное, быть может, объяснение: влюбленным просто мало земли, и Белла взмывает ввысь, к небу. Полотно вообще пронизано многообразными авторскими метафорами: это и чудесный натюрморт на красной скатерти, напоминающий о брачном пиршестве, и нежная, едва расцветшая ветка на фоне неба, и птичка, зажатая в руке молодого мужчины. In September 1915 he went to Petrograd and entered the service of the War Industry Committee.

Birth of Daughter Ida
In 1916 his only daughter, Ida, was born in Vitebsk; she later became her father's biographer and a scholar of his work.

Commissar of Arts for Vitebsk Governorate
In the summer of 1918, after meeting Lunacharsky, he was appointed plenipotentiary Commissar for the Arts of Vitebsk Governorate; he founded the People's Art School and an art museum in Vitebsk.
28 January 1919
Opening of the Vitebsk Art School
On 28 January 1919 Chagall opened the Vitebsk Art School, to which he attracted El Lissitzky and Kazimir Malevich, and also hired his first teacher, Yehuda (Yuri) Pen.
