Über das Gemälde

Строганов Александр Сергеевич (1733–1811) — граф, сын С. Г. Строганова и Софьи Кирилловны (урожд. Нарышкиной). С 1752 по 1757 учился заграницей. В 1761 получил титул графа Священной Римской империи, в 1762 камергер, в 1770 тайный советник, с 1775 действительный тайный советник, сенатор, в 1796 обер-камергер, с 1798 граф Российской империи, директор Публичной библиотеки. С 1800 президент ИАХ. С 1784 по 1811 петербургский губернский предводитель дворянства, с 1801 член Государственного совета. Коллекционер. Лично составил и издал в небольшом количестве описание своей коллекции под заглавием « Catalogue raisonne des tableaux, que composent la collection du comte A. de Stroganoff ». Был женат дважды: первая жена — А. М. Воронцова, вторая — княжна Е. П. Трубецкая. Изображен с орденами Белого Орла (лента и звезда) и св. Анны (крест). Портретная галерея Русского музея. Лица России. A pension and a free apartment in the Louvre
Although a foreigner, often called Roslin le suédois (“Roslin the Swede”), he is granted a pension and a free apartment in the Louvre. By then he has painted several portraits of members of the French royal family and of foreign princes.

His wife, Marie-Suzanne Giroust, dies
His dearly loved wife, the pastel painter Marie-Suzanne Giroust (1734–1772), dies.

Receives the Swedish Order of Vasa
His native Sweden confers the Order of Vasa on him, one of the first to receive it; from then on he is also known as Roslin le Chevalier, “Roslin the knight”.

A visit to Sweden after his wife’s death
After his wife’s death he visits his native Sweden and paints members of the royal family. By then he has been elected a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts, as a foreign honorary member.
