Studying at the Académie Suisse, he meets Camille Pissarro and Paul Cézanne, with whom he will maintain lifelong friendships, and Francisco Oller.
1863
The “Salon des Refusés” with Manet, Pissarro and Cézanne
Exhibits at the famous Salon des Refusés alongside Édouard Manet, Camille Pissarro and Paul Cézanne, although the works of Guillaumin (and Cézanne) were not listed under his name.
1868
Leaves his job for painting; hard times
Leaves his job to devote himself entirely to painting but is in need and earns his living by painting window blinds.
1874
The first Impressionist exhibition
Shows three landscapes at the first Impressionist exhibition, among them “Sunset at Ivry”, whose motif echoes Monet's “Impression, Sunrise”; he is a member of the Société anonyme des artistes peintres, sculpteurs et graveurs from the start. He later takes part in the exhibitions of 1877, 1880, 1881, 1882 and 1886 (other accounts say in all but the second, of 1876).
1891
A lottery win: he leaves his job for painting
Wins 100,000 francs in a lottery (a municipal one, according to other accounts a state lottery), is finally free of his administrative job in Paris and begins to travel in search of more varied subjects, devoting himself entirely to painting.
