Moving for good to Petit-Gennevilliers: garden and yachts

In 1888 Caillebotte moved permanently to Petit-Gennevilliers, where he devoted himself to gardening and yachting and spent much time with his brother Martial and his friend Renoir.

  3. after 1888

Renoir often came to stay with Caillebotte, and they engaged in far-ranging discussions on art, politics, literature and philosophy.

  4. after 1888

Wins regattas in his boat “Roastbeef”

Living at Petit-Gennevilliers put him close to regattas, and he won several races in his boat, Roastbeef.

  5. 1890

Helps Monet secure Manet’s “Olympia” for the state

In 1890 Caillebotte played a major role in helping Claude Monet organize a public subscription and persuade the French state to purchase Édouard Manet’s “Olympia” (1863).

  6. early 1890s

A slowdown: he stops painting large canvases

His painting career slowed dramatically in the early 1890s, when he stopped working on large canvases; he turned increasingly to en plein air landscapes, especially river scenes, and to floral still lifes.
