Lamb was one of a group of young artists pioneering new ways of representing landscape in the years immediately before the First World War. He exhibited at the New England Art Club and was a member of the Camden Town and London Groups of artists. During the War he served as Official War Artist in Macedonia, Palestine and France, and presumably did this watercolour while in Palestine in 1917-18. His landscape includes no readily identifiable features, for his interests lay in expressing its mood through colour and form rather than in delineating its topographical elements.
