Über das Werk
East Bergholt, as John Constable's home, must have had special resonance for a landscape painter such as Algernon Newton; indeed, Newton was particularly attracted to 'Constable Country', producing two drawings of Flatford as well as this sketch of a cottage in East Bergholt for the Recording Britain scheme. Unlike some of his colleagues on the scheme, Newton made no attempt to disguise the passage of time since Constable's death, including some distinctly modern telephone poles and wires to the left of the cottage.
