The Walker Art Center, then directed by Martin Friedman, buys Big Self-Portrait, the first painting Close ever sells; he credits the purchase with launching his career.

His first print is the focus of a “Projects” exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art.

A three-month residency at Crown Point Press
His first serious foray into printmaking: he moves himself and his family to San Francisco for a three-month residency at Crown Point Press to work on a mezzotint. The press finds the largest copper plate it can (36 inches wide) and buys a new press, allowing him to make a work three feet by four feet.
