Illustrates Runeberg's “The Tales of Ensign Stål”
Having taken to illustrating poetry, Edelfelt illustrated the epic poem by Johan Ludvig Runeberg, a family friend he admired. Runeberg's company left a lasting mark on him and at times drew him to scenes from Finnish history.

“Pro Finlandia”: answering Nicholas II's decree
In February 1899 Nicholas II issued a decree curtailing the Finns' political liberties. Edelfelt mobilised a network of Finnish artists and cultural figures behind “Pro Finlandia”, a petition to the Russian government seeking recognition of the independence of the arts in Finland.
