Im Leben von Ansel Adams

Das ganze Leben
  1. 1963 · Auszeichnung

    John Muir Award

  2. March 1963

The “Fiat Lux” commission: the University of California campuses

In March 1963 Clark Kerr, the president of the University of California, commissions Adams and Nancy Newhall to photograph the university's campuses for its centennial. The collection, titled “Fiat Lux” after the university's motto, is published in 1967.

  3. 1965

    Moving to Carmel Highlands

Suffering from gout and arthritis, Adams hopes that a new home will make him feel better; Santa Fe is ruled out by commitments in California, and a friend offers property overlooking the Big Sur coast. With the architect Eldridge Spencer he and his wife plan the house from 1961 and move in 1965, and Adams devotes much of his time to printing the negatives accumulated over forty years.

  4. 1974

A retrospective at the Met and an exhibition in Arles

In 1974 Adams has a major retrospective at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York; the same year he exhibits at the Rencontres d'Arles, an annual summer photography festival in France.

  5. 1975

Co-founding the Center for Creative Photography

In 1975 Adams co-founds the Center for Creative Photography at the University of Arizona in Tucson, which houses his archive and handles some of his estate matters.

  6. 1979

The first official photographic portrait of a US president

In 1979 President Jimmy Carter commissions Adams to make the first official photographic portrait of a US president. On this occasion Adams gives Carter a letter containing two memoranda: one advocating federal protection for Big Sur, the other arguing for stronger legislation to protect Alaskan wilderness.
