  1. mid-1770s

Commission for the twelve “Doge’s Feasts”

Guardi was commissioned to paint a series of twelve canvases on the festive ceremony of the “Marriage of the Doge to the Sea”, held for the election of Doge Alvise IV Mocenigo in 1763. He based them on Giovanni Battista Brustolon’s engravings after Canaletto, published by Lodovico Furlanetto in 1766–1770.

  2. 1782

Commission: the visit of the “Count and Countess of the North”

Guardi was commissioned to record in six paintings the reception by the Venetian Senate of the Russian heir Paul Petrovich and Maria Feodorovna, travelling as the “Count and Countess of the North”; the series survives only in part (Munich, Alte Pinakothek; Venice, Cini collection). The patron is unknown, and Pietro Edwards may have acted as intermediary; by other accounts, the commission came from the Venetian government, two canvases survive, and two more were commissioned for the visit of Pope Pius VI.

  3. 12 September 1782

Admitted to the Venetian Academy of Fine Arts

Francesco Guardi was admitted to the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice. Other accounts say he was a member of the Venetian Academy from 1784.

  4. 1792

    His final illness

Guardi spent the last month of his life bedridden in his home on the Campiello de la Madonna in Cannaregio, suffering from pulmonary vomiting, constant fever and swelling of the legs and abdomen.
