Work in Lucerne: Murals for the Hertenstein House

Together with his father he painted the interior and exterior walls of the house of the merchant Jakob von Hertenstein in Lucerne, where he remained in 1517-1519; he also produced cartoons for stained glass.

    Marriage to Elsbeth Binsenstock-Schmid

He married Elsbeth Binsenstock-Schmid, the widow of a Basel tanner, who was older than he; the marriage produced four children.

  4. autumn 1519

    Return to Basel

In the autumn of 1519 he returned from Lucerne to Basel, where he quickly reestablished himself and opened a busy workshop; around this time his brother Ambrosius died.
