Lenbach finds an important patron, Baron Adolf Friedrich von Schack; with his support and a guaranteed annual income he leaves for Italy in 1863. He returns to Munich in 1866.

Gold medal at the Exposition Universelle
In 1867 Lenbach wins a gold medal at the Exposition Universelle.

To Spain to copy Old Masters for Schack
In 1867 Lenbach goes to Spain for a year, accompanied by his student Ernst Friedrich von Liphart, to make more copies of the Old Masters for Schack.
