Derweil im Leben von Lovis Corinth

Das ganze Leben
  1. 1911

Elected Head of the Berlin Secession

After the resignation of president Max Liebermann and the members of the board, Lovis Corinth was elected the association's new head.

  2. 1911

    Stroke and Partial Paralysis

Corinth suffered a stroke that left him paralyzed on one side; with his wife's help he began painting with his right hand again within a year, and his style took on Expressionist qualities.

  3. 1913

    Major Retrospective at Cassirer's

As an act of reconciliation, Paul Cassirer organized a major retrospective of 228 of Corinth's oil paintings, opened by Max Liebermann; the same year the first monograph on the artist, by Georg Biermann, was published.

  4. 1913

    Remained in the Free Secession

After accusations against Cassirer, 42 artists left the Berlin Secession, including Liebermann and the entire board; Corinth remained in the association, which took the name Free Secession, where he was the only artist of international renown.

  5. 1914

A Journey Cut Short by the First World War

He toured Monte Carlo and Rome, where he was especially drawn to Raphael's frescoes in the Vatican; at St. Moritz the journey was cut short by the outbreak of the First World War, whose beginning Corinth welcomed.

  6. 1915

    Re-elected Chairman of the Secession

He was again elected chairman of the Berlin Secession and remained the association's president until 1925.
