Elopement to Hamburg and Marriage to Anna van Broeckhof
In 1638 Wouwerman eloped to Hamburg with his fiancée Anna Pieters van Broeckhof to marry against the will and religious convictions of his father (Anna was a Catholic). The couple had ten children, seven of whom survived.

Work in the Workshop of Evert Decker
During his stay in Hamburg, Wouwerman worked in the workshop of the painter Evert Decker.

Return from Hamburg to Haarlem
In 1642 Wouwerman returned from Hamburg to his native Haarlem, where he lived for the rest of his life and by its end achieved recognition, honour, and fame in the Haarlem community.
