The court intrigues of Louvois
After Colbert's fall the Marquis de Louvois tries, against the king's will, to remove Le Brun from work at court; the Academy, loyal to him, re-elects him for a new term, but court intrigues undermine the health of the ageing artist.

He dies in his own mansion at the Gobelins Manufactory in Paris; the paintings of Versailles remain unfinished and are completed from his sketches by Noël Coypel.
