Über die Skulptur

The French sculptor Desbois often drew his subject matter from classical mythology. This sculpture is inspired by the myth of the princess Leda, who was raped by the god Jupiter when disguised as a swan. Here Dusbois allows Leda, who is unaware of the danger, to lean protectively over the swan, who will soon show his true self. Above giving contemporary expression to traditional subject matter, Desbois’s focus was capturing movement. He worked in Rodin’s studio from 1884 to 1914, which influenced his way of sculpting.
