Im Leben von Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin
Das ganze Leben1737
Regular showings at the Salon
From 1737 Chardin exhibits regularly at the Salon. He will prove a “dedicated academician”, attending the Academy's meetings for fifty years and serving in turn as counsellor, treasurer and secretary.
1743
Elected a counsellor of the Academy
In 1743 Chardin is elected a counsellor of the Royal Academy — the first of the offices (then treasurer and secretary) he will hold there in turn.
1744
Married: Marguerite Pouget
1752
A pension from Louis XV
In 1752 Louis XV grants Chardin a pension of 500 livres. The pension is linked with the protection of the marquis de Vandières (the future marquis de Marigny) and of a brother of Madame de Pompadour who was director of royal buildings in 1751–1773.
1759
The Salon of 1759: nine paintings and Diderot
At the Salon of 1759 Chardin exhibits nine paintings; it is the first Salon reviewed by Denis Diderot, who would prove a great admirer and public champion of his work. Three years earlier, in 1756, the painter had returned to the subject of still life.
1772
His son's death in Venice
In 1772 Chardin's son, also a painter, drowns in Venice, a probable suicide.
