Im Leben von Jusepe de Ribera
Das ganze Lebennot after 1613 (possibly from 1606)
Sets out for Italy to study the old masters
Probably no later than 1613, perhaps as early as 1606, Ribera leaves for Italy to study the paintings of the old masters: first north to Cremona, Milan and Parma, then to Rome, where he gets to know the work of Guido Reni and Ludovico Carracci. Other accounts allow that he may have been there as early as 1605–09; he never returns to Spain.

1613
Recorded in Rome's Accademia di San Luca
In October 1613 documents confirm that Ribera is in Rome and a member of the Accademia di San Luca; other accounts put his election to the Academy in 1626.
1613–1616
Rome: fame, earnings and debts
According to Giulio Mancini, Ribera begins by working for daily wages in other artists' workshops, then wins a strong reputation and large profits; Guido Reni is among the admirers of his work, and a painter of his kind had not been seen in Rome for years. But he is lazy at times, spends extravagantly and falls into debt.
not after 1614
A missed Easter confession
According to Mancini, Ribera had trouble with the Roman authorities when he neglected his Easter confession one year, likely in 1614 or earlier.
1615–1616
Via Margutta: the foreigners' quarter
Parish registers confirm that at Easter in 1615 and 1616 Ribera lives on the Via Margutta, then known as the foreigners' quarter, with his brothers Jerónimo and Juan; he apparently leads a bohemian life among other artists.
