Über das Gemälde

This painting was acquired by the Indian Museum and transferred to the South Kensington Museum in 1879, but no accession details were noted at the time and nothing is known about the artist whose name is recorded on the back: "W.A. Fulton pixt." It depicts Hindu stone sculptures painted in black, white and grey on canvas. The original Indian Museum register describes it as "Copy of stone carving representing idols, &c." without recording the place in India where these carvings were to be found.
