Über das Werk

Charles Knight produced a number of topographical views of Brighton, Lewes and the surrounding areas, for the "Recording Britain" scheme that was established during World War Two.

This view of Southover High Street, Lewes, was produced by Knight in 1940. In the centre left is Anne of Cleves House, given to her by Henry VIII when their marriage was annulled in 1541. Southover church can be seen in the distance. Apart from the removal of the railings shown at the right of the picture, the street scene survived the war largely unchanged.

The V&A also holds another view of Anne of Cleves House, looking west (E.2349-1949).
