Derweil im Leben von Margaret Bourke-White

Das ganze Leben
  1. 1939

    Married: Erskine Caldwell

  2. 1939

The book “North of the Danube”

With Caldwell she travels through Germany, Austria and Czechoslovakia to record life under Nazism; the result is a travelogue about Czechoslovakia under the shadow of Nazi occupation.

  3. 1939–1942

    J. Edgar Hoover files her among the “dangerous”

FBI director J. Edgar Hoover places her and her then husband Erskine Caldwell in a category of dangerous persons to be interned in the event of a future national emergency. For years agents read her mail, searched her luggage and kept informants, but found nothing incriminating: there was no indication she was ever active on behalf of the Communist Party.

  4. 1941

The only foreign photographer in Moscow at the invasion

She is the only foreign photographer in Moscow when German forces invade; taking refuge in the US Embassy, she photographs the ensuing firestorms.

  5. May – September 1941

    Returns to the USSR

She spends the period from May to September in the country; her visit coincides with Germany’s breach of the non-aggression pact.

  6. 1942

    Divorces Erskine Caldwell

The marriage, contracted in 1939, ends in divorce; together they had produced three books.
