Im Leben von Max Pechstein

Das ganze Leben
  1. 1908

    Moves to Berlin

He settles in Berlin and joins the Berlin Secession; over the next three years other painters will make the same move.

  2. 1908

Meets Kees van Dongen in Paris

On his return from Italy he spends time in Paris, where he meets the Fauvist painter Kees van Dongen and persuades him to join the Brücke.

  3. 1910

Founds the New Secession and chairs it

He helps to found the New Secession and becomes its chairman. His decorative, colorful prints, inspired by the art of Van Gogh, Matisse and the Fauves, bring him recognition.

  4. 1910

Refused a place in the Berlin Secession exhibition

The Berlin Secession categorically refuses to let him exhibit. After this Pechstein helps to found the New Secession.

  5. 1911

    Married: Lotte Pechstein

  6. 1912

    Break with the Brücke

After years of rising tension, Pechstein shows some of his work at the Berlin Secession on its own, without paintings by other Brücke members, and leaves the group; other accounts say he was expelled. His conservative style appealed to a wider audience, and recognition and awards far outpacing those of his peers bred animosity in the group.
