Über das Werk
Luke Fildes was commissioned to provide illustrations for Charles Dickens's last novel, The Mystery of Edwin Drood. Dickens died in 1870, before completing the text.
This sketch is for an illustration entitled Jasper's Sacrifices, which shows John Jasper and Rosa Bud in a garden. She recoils in horror as he professes his love. The published image is reversed, with Rosa sitting on the right hand side.
