This pencil sketch shows the actor Daniel Egerton (1772-1835) in the costume worn for the role of Clytus in Alexander the Great. Having begun his acting career in the provinces Egerton made his first appearance at Covent Garden in 1802. He remained part of the Covent Garden company until close to his death in 1835 generally performing secondary characters in tragedy or serious drama. The role of Clytus was one of Egerton's most well received parts.
