Über das Gemälde

In den Worten des Museums — auf Russisch

Im Leben von Vasily Andreevich Tropinin

Das ganze Leben
  1. 1810–1820s

    Copies the old masters

Perfecting his craft, Tropinin copies pictures by old masters from private collections in Moscow, mastering expressive contours, subtle modelling in light and shade, and colour. Moscow holds no art exhibitions, yet he quickly becomes known as a good portraitist, and the journal Otechestvennye zapiski remarks that the colour of this serf of Count Morkov “resembles Titian’s”.

  2. 1820s

Portraits of professors and Moscow dignitaries

Tropinin works on portraits of university professors and notable people of Moscow; his likenesses of leading dignitaries adorn the halls of the Guardianship Council, the Horse-Racing Society, the Agricultural Society and others. Among his sitters are heroes of the Patriotic War of 1812: the English painter Dawe used these portraits as iconographic material for the Military Gallery of the Winter Palace.

  3. from 1824

Lives and works in Moscow for the rest of his life

From 1824 until his death Tropinin lives and works in Moscow, where his tireless portrait work makes him the best-known and leading portraitist of the ancient capital.

  4. 1828

His wife and son are freed

Five years after the artist’s own liberation his wife Anna Ivanovna and son Arseny, who had remained in bondage to Morkov, receive their freedom.

  5. 1833

Teaches pupils of the public art class

From 1833 Tropinin teaches on a voluntary basis the pupils of the newly opened public art class in Moscow, the future Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture.

  6. winter 1836

    Meets Karl Bryullov

Muscovites give a ceremonial welcome to Karl Bryullov, the author of “The Last Day of Pompeii”, and Tropinin makes his acquaintance.
