Über das Werk
Rembrandt achieved the velvety black tones in this print with drypoint, a technique he had previously never used so extensively. We see the Jewish Mordecai seated on the horse of the Persian king Ahasuerus and garbed in the monarch’s clothing. This was his reward for services rendered. He is accompanied by Ahasuerus’s vizier Haman, who actually wants to kill all the Jews.

Birth of His Son Titus
In 1641 Rembrandt and Saskia's son Titus was born — the only one of their four children to survive infancy.

Saskia died in 1642, probably of tuberculosis, a year after Titus's birth. Rembrandt's drawings of her on her sickbed are among his most deeply felt works.
