Depicted here is the moment when Virginia's father, Virginius, curses the tyrant Appius, who wanted to enslave her. To prevent this, Virginius killed his daughter. Through this drastic deed, Virginia's virtue and freedom were preserved. This representation thus testifies to the abhorrence
of tyrants and – just like the pendant The Death of Julius Caesar – embodies Republicanism.
