The Salon d’Automne and the Salon des Indépendants
Thanks to the standing of his eldest brother Jacques, a member of a prestigious academy, Duchamp’s work was shown at the 1908 Salon d’Automne and the following year at the Salon des Indépendants; Fauvism and Cézanne’s proto-Cubism influenced his painting. The critic Guillaume Apollinaire, later a friend, called his nudes “very ugly” but predicted that Duchamp could reconcile art and the people.
