Im Leben von Oswald Achenbach
Das ganze Leben1841
Leaves the academy for nature studies
In 1841, after six years, he leaves the academy for reasons that are unclear; his sketchbooks show that he spent this period on intensive nature studies in the area around Düsseldorf.
1843
Journey through Upper Bavaria and North Tyrol
At sixteen he sets out on a journey of several months, continuing his nature studies; his earliest known oil paintings date from this period.
1845
Trip to northern Italy with Albert Flamm
With his friend and later pupil Albert Flamm he travels to northern Italy; the paintings that came of it are mostly Italian landscape motifs, and his early work shows the influence of Johann Wilhelm Schirmer and Carl Rottmann (another account has him moving to Bavaria in 1845 and then to Italy).
