Über das Gemälde

The subject of the painting is believed to be Frederic Cardew. In the 1930s Father Cardew worked in Paris, running a residential club for theatre girls who were in financial difficulties. He was a friend of Mrs Edward Compton who ran a similar club in London and is portrayed in a painting also held by the V&A Theatre Collections S.819-1991.
