First solo museum exhibition
His first solo museum exhibition is held at the Pasadena Art Museum in Pasadena, California.
1970
A Guggenheim Fellowship and a trip to Japan
With a Guggenheim Fellowship he travels to Japan, where he installs his first outdoor sculptures, “To Encircle Base Plate (Hexagram)” and “Sugi Tree”, in Ueno Park as part of the Tokyo Biennale.
1970
The Zen gardens of Myoshin-ji in Kyoto

1970
His marriage to Nancy Graves ends
His marriage to the artist Nancy Graves, begun in 1965, lasted until 1970.
1972
Begins working in printmaking
Working closely with Gemini G.E.L. in Los Angeles, he develops unconventional printing techniques; his first lithographs, “Circuit”, “Balance”, “Eight by Eight” and “183rd & Webster Avenue”, are each titled after a sculpture made around the same time. In all he will make more than 200 printed works.
