Dean of the Guild of Saint Luke
He becomes dean of the guild; David is one of the leading citizens of Bruges.
1515
A visit to Antwerp
He visits Antwerp, where he is impressed by the work of Quentin Matsys, who had introduced greater vitality and intimacy into the conception of sacred themes; together they work to preserve the traditions of the Bruges school against the influences of the Italian Renaissance. He may be the “Meester gheraet van brugghe” who became a master of the Antwerp guild in 1515, and he probably ran workshops in both Antwerp and Bruges.
c. 1519
A lawsuit with his apprentice Ambrosius Benson
Around 1519 he falls into a dispute with Ambrosius Benson, who had served his apprenticeship with him, over a number of paintings and drawings that Benson had collected from other artists: David refused to return them because Benson owed him a large debt. Benson sought legal recourse in court and won, after which David was condemned to a prison term.
