This scene modelled in wax illustrates a group of three musicians in a room. The central figure is seated on a chair placed upon two coffers inscribed 'Voluntary subscription' for the benefit of 'Percy ye artist' and 'Fund for the benefit of decayed musicians'.
The scene is the work of Samuel Percy (ca. 1753-1819), one of the foremost portraitist in wax in the nineteenth century. Percy was an Irish wax-modeller and sculptor, active in England. Around 1777 he went from Dublin to London, where he soon established a thriving practice as a portraitist in wax. By 1786 he had completed 800 historical and contemporary portraits.
