Imens i livet hos Sutherland, Graham

Hele livet
  1. 1938

    First solo exhibition of paintings

His first one-man exhibition of paintings opens at the Rosenberg and Helft Gallery in London, dominated by oil paintings of surreal, organic landscapes of the Pembrokeshire coast. These are the works that secured his reputation as a leading British modern artist.

  2. 1939

    Moves to rural Gloucestershire

At the start of the Second World War the Chelsea School of Art closes for the duration of the conflict, and Sutherland moves to rural Gloucestershire.

  3. August 1940

    Becomes an official war artist

Like Paul Nash, Stanley Spencer and Henry Moore, he is enlisted as a “war artist” for the duration of the war; from 1940 to 1945 he works full-time on salary for the War Artists’ Advisory Committee. Working in London, in remote English counties and in France, he produces many watercolours and pen and pencil drawings, and some 150 paintings for the committee.
