For about twenty years he lives at No. 1617, the Great Piazza, Covent Garden; his studio manager is Edward Byng. His studio turns out portraits on an almost industrial scale, working from a brief sketch of the face with the rest completed by pupils and assistants, and Kneller can receive up to fourteen sitters in a single day.

Justice of the Peace for Middlesex
Besides painting, he serves as a Justice of the Peace for the county of Middlesex; he is said to have had a shrewd wit and sound judgment and to have dispensed a rough-and-ready equity that commanded respect. Among his cases was a well-known entrapment trial, immortalised by Alexander Pope in a satire published in 1737.
