Om skulpturen

This ivory group represents the Coronation of the Virgin, made in Paris in about 1320. The Virgin Mary is shown with clasped hands, seated on the left of Christ and looking towards him as he crowns her. The figures are coloured, colour that was added as post-medieval invention in the first half of the nineteenth century.

It is likely that this relief was set into a smaller portable altar in the form of a triptych or tablernacle. This subject was especially popular in Christian art between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries, in both monumental and small-scale formats.
