In 1960–1964 he photographed Jean Renoir (1960), André Breton (1961), Roland Barthes (1963) and Coco Chanel (1964).

  2. 1965–1967

A second retrospective: Tokyo, Paris, New York, London

  3. 1966

He steps back from Magnum for portraits and landscapes

In 1966 he withdrew as a principal of Magnum (which still distributes his photographs) to concentrate on portraiture and landscapes; he settled in the mountains of Provence and took up drawing Alpine landscapes.

Divorce from Ratna Mohini after thirty years

In 1967 he divorced his first wife of thirty years, the Javanese dancer Ratna Mohini (known as “Elie”).

Turning away from photography, back to drawing

In 1968 he began to turn away from photography and return to his passion for drawing and painting; he admitted that perhaps he had said all he could through photography.
