The Paduan and Venetian schools produced many statuettes of horses both with and without riders. Sources of inspiration were the horses on the façade of St. Mark's, Venice and the equestrian monuments of Gattamelata by Donatello and Bartolomeo Colleoni by Verrocchio.
Such reproductions of famous antique sculptures appealed to collectors, who would display them on the shelves of their studies.
