Investigated by the FBI for his pacifism

During the Second World War Wright's outspoken pacifism, anti-authoritarianism and anti-nationalism led to an FBI investigation: he was accused of encouraging his apprentices to seek conscientious-objector status to avoid the draft, which he vehemently denied.

  3. 1948

Endorses a presidential candidate for the first time

For the first time in his career Wright publicly endorsed a politician, the former Vice President Henry A. Wallace, for president. He called his own economic creed “organic capitalism”: equality of opportunity rather than of outcome.

  5. 1956

    The mile-high skyscraper

Wright conceived Mile High Illinois for Chicago, a skyscraper a mile (1,609 m) tall — a tapering triangular prism for 130,000 people with atomic-powered lifts; the project was cancelled. That same year his Price Tower was built in Bartlesville, Oklahoma.
