Om maleriet

Lilac Bush in the Sun is an oil on canvas painting by Claude Monet, from 1873. It is held in the Pushkin Museum, in Moscow. It is a pendant to the same artist's Resting Under a Lilac Bush (Musée d'Orsay, Paris).

It was exhibited at Paul Durand-Ruel's gallery until 1877 and then again in 1891. It was bought by Dmitry Schukin in 1899 - his collection was seized by the state after the October Revolution and the work was initially assigned to the First Museum of Old Western Painting before being transferred to the new Pushkin Museum in 1924, where it remains.

Imens i livet hos Claude Monet

Hele livet
  1. 1870–1871

    London exile

Evading conscription during the Franco-Prussian War, Monet lived in London, where he studied Constable and Turner, met Pissarro and Whistler, and became acquainted with his first and principal dealer, Paul Durand-Ruel — an encounter decisive for his career.

  2. 1871

    Zaandam: 25 paintings

Leaving London, Monet settled in Zaandam in the Netherlands, where he painted twenty-five pictures (the police suspected him of revolutionary activity). During this period he also made his first visit to Amsterdam.

  3. 1874

    First Impressionist exhibition

At the exhibition, organized on the initiative of Monet and his associates as an alternative to the Salon, "Impression, Sunrise" was shown. The critic Leroy mockingly dubbed the participants "impressionists" — and so the term Impressionism was born.
