Sentenced for an affair with a married woman
Already the master of his own workshop, he was sentenced to six months in prison and a fine for an affair with a married woman, the wife of the sailor Francesco Cortese. Before that he had studied with the Vivarini in Venice and is believed to have worked in Francesco Squarcione’s workshop in Padua.

Leaves for Zadar
After the sentence he leaves for Zadar in Dalmatia, then a territory of the Venetian Republic and now part of Croatia.

Moves to the Marche
He moves to the Marche and works there for the rest of his life. There his pupil and collaborator was Pietro Alemanno, a painter who had come from Germany or Austria.

A permanent home in Ascoli Piceno
From 1473 the documents give Ascoli Piceno as Crivelli’s permanent residence; they also point to Camerino and Fabriano. He worked on commissions from the Franciscans and Dominicans of Ascoli.
