Imens i livet hos Franz Xaver Winterhalter

Hele livet
  1. 1860s

Commission for portraits of the Mexican imperial couple

During the Second Mexican Empire under Maximilian I, he is commissioned to paint portraits of the imperial couple. The Empress of Mexico, Charlotte of Belgium, was the daughter of Louise-Marie, Queen of the Belgians, whom Winterhalter had painted at the beginning of his career in France; some of the portraits are still displayed at Chapultepec Castle.

  2. 1860s

Commissions from the Russian aristocracy; a new manner

He works a great deal for the Russian aristocracy. To speed things up he stops making preliminary sketches and moves from his earlier academic manner, reminiscent of enamel miniatures, to a quick painterly manner in the Romantic spirit.

  3. autumn 1864

Journey to Vienna: Franz Joseph and Elisabeth

In the autumn of 1864 he goes to Vienna to paint portraits of Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elisabeth.

  4. 1864

    Last journey to England

He travels to England for the last time; he had first visited it in 1842.
