Imens i livet hos Jules Bastien-Lepage

Hele livet
  1. 1876

A second attempt at the Prix de Rome fails

With “Priam at the Feet of Achilles” (now in Lille) Bastien-Lepage again misses the Prix de Rome: a year earlier he had taken second place in the competition with “Angels Appearing to the Shepherds”, later shown again at the 1878 Exposition Universelle. The failure leads him to resolve to return to country life.

  2. 1877

“My Parents” and a portrait of Lady L. at the Salon of 1877

For the Salon of 1877 Bastien-Lepage sends “My Parents” and a full-length portrait of Lady L.

  3. 1879

Commissioned to portray the Prince of Wales

Growing fame brings Bastien-Lepage prominent commissions: in 1879 he is asked to paint the Prince of Wales. A small portrait of the prince is shown at the Royal Academy in 1880.

  4. 1879–1882

    Travels in England

From 1879 to 1882 Bastien-Lepage travels in England.

  5. 1880–1883

    Travels in Italy

From 1880 to 1883 Bastien-Lepage travels in Italy.
